Questions asked frequently > GENERAL TANK FAQs > What do I look for in a rainwater tank...
We encourage you to find the right rainwater tank for your needs. When considering a rainwater tank, here are some things to keep in mind.
- The tank should show as little light as possible through the walls - if you can see the sun shining through the tank wall, you run the risk of growing algae in your tank. Over time, you may also be able to see 'bath rings' from outside the tank, where silt and algae has deposited at the different levels.
- A larger capacity tank such as the Fatboy should feel solid when empty - if you can push the walls in and out, then there is a chance it will bulge when it is full of water.
- If you are thinking of drinking the water from your tank, make sure it is made of a food grade material as approved by the FEA. You should also investigate filters for the rainwater before drinking and ensure your roof and gutters are not made of a material that will contaminate the water.
Not all of these points are applicable to smaller tanks or rain barrels, as the pressure of the water and the time you are likely to be storing water is greatly reduced.
Good luck with your purchase!
